Austrian game industry grows 71% in 6 years, creating over 1000 Jobs
The PGDA is proud to share the new Austrian game industry report, conducted together with IWI and UBIT. The sector shows a growth of 71% since 2018, generating €188 million in total revenue and a rise from 474 jobs in 2017 to 1080 jobs in 2024.
Around 150 active companies form the industry of game development in the first half of 2024. In just the last three years, surveyed companies developed over 400 games, showing the creative output of the sector. While the industry remains characterized by small and micro studios, a few medium-sized companies are also emerging.
Economic Impact & Projection
The Austrian game development industry generated €188.7 million in total revenues in 2023, of which €92.8 million came directly from development activities. Through indirect and induced effects, the sector contributes significantly to the broader economy:
- €96.9 million in added value was created in Austria
- Every euro generated by game developers led to an additional €1.06 of added value across the economy
- Around 2260 jobs in Austria are secured directly and indirectly by game development
Since 2017, revenues have increased by nearly 285%, and employment has grown from 474 jobs in 2017 to 1080 jobs in 2024; a rise of 128%. Even with slower growth expected in the coming years, the industry is projected to reach €149 million in revenues and more than 1500 jobs by 2029.

Serious Games on the Rise
Beyond entertainment, serious games are becoming an important field within Austrian game development. Around 20 to 30 companies specialize in applied games, employing up to 150 people. Their work ranges from educational games to healthcare, professional training, and raising awareness for social issues such as climate change and conflict prevention. As digitalization progresses, serious games and gamification are expected to gain even greater importance.

Looking Ahead
Over half of the surveyed companies expect employment to grow in the next three years. However, there is room for improvement. In 2024, 77% of companies still rate Austria as a poor or very poor business location for game development, with urgent needs in areas such as financing options, public support, and active policy engagement. Stronger political backing and better access to funding are seen as crucial for ensuring the continued success of the industry.
