Joining us next week is Chloé Coudray from [JYROS](https://jyros-jeuvideo.com/en/home/) to introduce their work on an online platforms that allows game development studios to calculate the environmental impact of their projects.
Introducing JYROS:
JYROS is an online platform that allows video game companies to calculate their environmental impact. Created by a consortium of French regional associations and national institutions, it is supported by various funding bodies like Europe Creative MEDIA.
Since releasing in 2030, it attracted more than 400 companies from the gaming industry, and is now a mandatory step for studios wishing to apply for funding from the French CNC (the National Center for Cinema and Animation): Since the 1st March 2025, the CNC requires studios to submit an estimated carbon footprint of their project using JYROS when they apply to receive production grants.
It is also compliant with the GHG protocol and European carbon accounting standards.
Why it matters:
- Beyond the contribution to our society’s survival, adopting more sustainable production practices comes with real benefits for gaming studios:
- A reduction in regulatory risks due to evolving EU and national laws (Ecodesign regulation, Greenwashing bans, CSRD reporting, etc.)
- Financial advantages as more funding bodies, outsourcing calls and banks start allocating bonuses related to clear sustainability strategies
- Concrete market benefits, ranging from responding to player’s expectation to act on the industry’s emissions to a clear expansion of a game’s addressable market as they lower their requirements from gaming equipment
- Expansion of their games‘ lifetime on handheld devices
- Cost reductions in hosting, equipment renewal and electricity bills
- etc.
How JYROS works:
JYROS is free to use, and uses monetary and financial data available to studios to provide numbers on four critical environmental factors: CO2 emissions, but also water consumption, energy consumption and abiotic resources. These are shared both as an overall number as well as a number per employee and per hour of game played, so growth and success do not become hurdles to virtuous actions.
With this assessment, studios are encouraged to take actions to improve their score, using the various resources and guides available on the JYROS website.
